There is one area of life which demonstrates just how badly we distort what God has said to us by limiting our viewing of things to our human eyes. That area has to do with what it means to be married. I realize just how easy it is to distort this heavenly concept by applying my own experience of marriage to all of life.

The Prophet Isaiah declares the following in 54.5: ‘For your Maker is your husband—the Lord Almighty is his name.’ Now if we view how God relates to us through our own experience of marriage, we will never understand or accept what God means by being wedded to us. The Christian faith teaches that the Church of Jesus Christ is in fact his bride—he is the Church’s husband!

Isaiah continues his teaching by defining what God means by being a husband: ‘the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer.’ The role of Redeemer is shown to us in the story of Ruth and Naomi where Boaz was their Kinsman Redeemer—he covered them, he met their needs, he delivered them, he protected them, and he brought them into the fullness of what God had in mind for them from the start.

For the believer this Kinsman Redeemer; this husband; this deliverer is none other than that one identified by Isaiah as he concludes: ‘he is called the God of all the earth.’ The Christian’s husband is nothing like the lout in your marriage! God the husband sets the standard of who the physical mate is to be—not the other way around. REJOICE! JESUS CHRIST IS YOUR HUSBAND!
