Whether we like to accept it or not, friends and enemies are everywhere around us! I am neither trying to be frightening, nor attempting to be cute here. It is a fact that no matter where we are in life, all we have to do is to make one false step and they will come out from the shadows to point out what’s wrong with us.

One case in point in Scripture is that of King David. We do not know but a small fraction of what he faced in terms of enemies, but we do know where he found victory. We read in 2 Samuel 22.2-4: He said: ‘The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation.’ His enemies could not succeed over him.

David made some false steps along the path, but he was quick to call upon his Deliverer, as the passage continues: ‘He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior—from violent men you save me. I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies.’ David was instant to repent, and to receive forgiveness.

There is a lesson here for each of us: enemies are everywhere; we will fall subject to their attacks; we must know our Deliverer; we must instantly repent of our sin in falling prey to the enemies; we must receive restoration to the position of safety; we must realize that the enemies cannot win against our God; and we must praise the Name of our Savior. JESUS IS OUR DEFENDER!
