We have discussed before this time the bent of many of the faithful to treat the Word of God as a buffet table, from which only those things are selected which taste good to the “shopper”. You cannot begin to imagine just how dangerous this habit is for us. Solomon speaks in Proverbs 30.5-6: ‘Every word of the Lord is flawless.’ It cannot be simpler than that!

That means even the words I do not like are still God’s word! Is that true even when a given word flies in the face of what I have always believed? It is true even if that word disagrees with what I have been taught by those whom I fully trust? I find that difficult to accept! Why would God do that to me?

The reality here is that God insists that we rely on him to teach, to interpret, to apply, and to confirm his word in our lives. We can only be certain of God as our Lord when we allow him to be Lord of every aspect of our lives! Solomon speaks further: ‘he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.’ God will both protect and defend those who will trust him with his word in their lives!

Like all good medications, there is a warning on the label of God’s word as King Solomon concludes: ‘Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.’ It is not enough to select which word to obey, or to avoid those words which are uncomfortable to us. We must not add to what God has said! I would refer you to Eve in the Garden of Eden. JUST KEEP THE WORD OF GOD!
