We must get beyond a reticence to get involved with the lives of others as we walk through this life. We often have the feeling that we cannot do everything; but there ought to be someone to help those folk; and that someone is responsible to meet those needs; or where is the government when you need them?

God does not intend for you and me to do everything! And he doesn’t expect the Church to spend her life in meeting those needs either. What he wants from us is our availability to meet those needs IF HE DIRECTS US TO DO THAT! We are to make a difference in the lives of those who don’t expect their needs to be met.

King Solomon shares godly wisdom on this in Proverbs 25.21-22: ‘If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.’ Do notice that God is concerned with those who are our enemies. He expects us to be the agents of change in those lives: they get food and drink FROM GOD!

There are benefits to this behavior: ‘in doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ The only awareness for those folk is that something is different. I have opened the door for them into the Lord’s presence. But there is more here: ‘and the Lord will reward you.’ The Kingdom of God wins at both ends—people are made aware of God, and God’s people reap the bounty! START FIRES!
