I find it hard to believe that any one of us has not experienced the sensation of being lost. I have been lost many times in my life: while driving in strange territory; in the woods while hunting; in strange buildings; in crowds; in faithlessness; and in thought. I clearly know what it means to not know where one is, let alone where one is going.

All one has to do is to follow directions, right? What if the directions are unclear? In the Deep South directions are shared differently than in other places—often using natural landmarks rather than road signs (if any such signs exist at all). How does one know where to go, and how will one know when one has arrived at the destination of choice?

I believe Saint Paul had something like this when he addressed a church going in all directions at the same time, as we read in 1 Corinthians 1.12-13: ‘What I mean is this: one of you says, ‘I follow Paul;’ another, ‘I follow Apollos;’ another, ‘I follow Cephas;’ still another, ‘I follow Christ.’’ Who knew where they were going? There is obviously a state of confusion here which Paul is keen to bring to clarity. He spoke directly to this matter: ‘Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul?’ There is only one way to get to where one is going!

As I have shared earlier, I am fascinated by modern technology—and that is particularly true of the global positioning satellite systems in modern cars. Not only can one know where one is at any time, one can know how to get to where one wants to go, and it is very clear when they have arrived at their destination. Would God have a lesser system for his Church? I believe the Holy Spirit helps us to FOLLOW GOD FOREVER!
