For those of us who serve the living God it is imperative that we move way beyond thinking that the love which our Father demands of us has anything at all to do with feelings. When Scripture speaks of love, it has nothing whatsoever to do with how we emotionally react to God or to anyone else.

Saint John in his Second Epistle verse six defines love from the perspective of the Almighty: ‘And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands.’ To love God is to obey him—it’s that simple. His love for us has no variance as to whether or not we are in his good graces. His love for us never changes.

Our problem is not to get into God’s love for us. It is impossible for us to get out of his love for us! His love is not based upon how close we are walking to him as our Lord—he loves us unconditionally. Are you getting a picture of the kind of love he has for you? Then, how is that love to be expressed by us in this world?

John concludes: ‘As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.’ We are to express his love for us, and our responsive love of him by our obedience to his commands to us toward everyone else in our lives! We are to walk in love as God defines it—not according to how we feel about God or anyone else at all. I HAVE DECIDED TO BE A LOVER!
