There is a great deal of excitement in the life of one who first realizes who Jesus is and why he came to earth. It is something like finding a treasure which nobody has ever seen before. One’s first reaction is to get hold of as much of this booty as possible, and to store it away so as not to lose it under any condition.

It is usually sometime later as one begins to share the beauty of this treasure that one discovers a marvelous truth—this is not just for me, but for those with whom I share my thrill. Saint Peter refers to this in 1 Peter 1.12-13: ‘It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you.’ The bounty is not to be stored away—it is for others to share. The value of it even grows as it is shared.

This treasure is of such a magnitude that all of heaven knows its worth, as Peter continues: ‘when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.’ Those who find Jesus are among the most highly privileged of all people—all of heaven is theirs.

What, then, are we to do? Get ready to share what God has placed into our hands! Peter concludes: ‘Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.’ We are privileged to know God, and to be able to share his treasure with those to whom we are sent to share. This treasure is in your hands.
