It seems to be a very natural part of the aging process that one spends a great deal of free time remembering the events of yore. One of those common things is to notice that folk easily remember the long and distant past, but do not recall the recent past without some degree of difficulty—a strange and yet true phenomena.

Saint Peter apparently knows of this as he speaks of the need to constantly remind his folk of the truth in 2 Peter 1.12-15: ‘So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have.’ My own experience of being refreshed in the truth I learned long ago comes to mind here.

Peter sees this as his ministry of reminding the saints as long as he is allowed to live in this life. He continues: ‘I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.’ We ought to never tire of hearing the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. I am a witness!

Why is this so important? I believe our Lord will remind us again and again of what we were taught of him and of his kingdom, and why he loves us so much. The Apostle concludes the matter: ‘And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.’ I pray the Lord will keep my memory of his love for me fresh in my life forever.
