The position of the heir in Holy Scripture is unique and very special, as we see it played out in the life of those who were among the people of God. The heir was always and only the first-born son and the privilege of that role was a double portion of everything the father owned. If there were three sons, there were four shares, and the heir got two shares while the others received one share apiece.

Within the Christian community, however, every single believer is heir to Father’s goods—joint-heirs with Jesus Christ, first-born of God the Father. What does that really mean? It means, simply, that each Spirit-filled follower of Jesus will receive a double portion of all our God has to offer. WOW! WOW! AND TRIPLE WOW!

And there is no time limit within which one must use these gifts—they are eternal! This is a new covenant, as we read in Hebrews 9.15-16: ‘For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance.’ I believe I can trust Jesus to fulfill his word.

Jesus did pay the price for our freedom from condemnation because of our sin in order that we could and would receive what God has offered to us, as the letter to the Hebrews continues: ‘now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it.’ Jesus died my death for me in order that I live forever, and now I am an heir of God. HALLELUJAH!
