We all recall that little ditty everyone knew and sang in the days of the hippie, the flower children; “He’s Got the Whole World In His Hands”. The mood established was one of love, peace and niceness—in the days before politically correct issues were addressed. This song offended nobody. We all enjoyed it whether or not we were Christians.

Now, of course, that would be totally out of the question in the public arena. We could not be offensive to those who did not believe as do we. That would be unloving and unkind, and others might feel badly. The simple truth is this: All of humanity—those within the Christian community and those without—are going to be shocked to our very roots when God fully reveals himself to us.

We really think we know God as Christians—and every other faith group feels the same way about the god they know. However, we are just now beginning to see the covers removed from his Glory. Listen to the prophet Habakkuk in 3.4: His splendor was like the sunrise; rays flashed from his hand, where his power was hidden. RIGHT! We really think we know our God.

The folk who witnessed God in the flesh in their presence were both astounded and totally dismayed when they caught a glimpse of the power of God among them. We now spend our lives in the realm of the Holy Spirit, but God’s true power is still hidden from us. I submit that when God reveals himself in power we will be like the Philistine god Dagon and fall on our faces before him as if stone; cold; and dead. We must pray to be enabled to handle God’s power rightly when we see him.
