Have you ever been in a situation wherein you see someone that you know that you know that you know, and yet you cannot recall the person’s name or where you know that one from? We’ve all been faced with that human frailty. And when we do remember it all, then how great it is to be able to declare, “I know you!”

Allow me to state without fear of contradiction that this will never be the case for our God. He will never have to scratch his head or plunge the depths of his memory to find out about us. We read of this in Psalm 139.1-5: ‘O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.’ Oh, yes! He knows us very, very well.

Not only does he know us by how we look or dress or act—he knows us as we really are on the inside. Nothing about our lives ever escapes his notice: ‘You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word in on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord.’ Think about that for a moment. How does it feel to know that you are fully known by God?

This is not to be construed as if there is an “eye-in-the-sky” from which we cannot escape because he is always watching us lest we go astray. He knows we will wander off the path as well or better than we know that. His goal is to protect us even in our wanderings: ‘You hem me in—behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.’ He loves us so much he doesn’t want us to get hurt by the dumb things we might do to ourselves. WE ARE WELL-KNOWN BY OUR GOD!
