In the Second Book of the Kings we read of a very committed relationship between the prophet Elijah and his protégé Elisha. Elijah was the prophet’s prophet—he ranked right up there with the best of the best in the Kingdom of God in terms of getting the word from the Lord and speaking it into any given situation. One does not think of Elijah without visualizing the word of God being proclaimed clearly.

In chapter two, verses 1-4, we read of the time of transition in the prophetic world: Elijah is about to be taken into heaven and Elisha’s designation as his replacement is about to be fulfilled. In the first four verses we see the transition in the process being played out with Elijah offering his replacement the opportunity to simply relax in the face of what is coming.

Several times Elijah offers Elisha the freedom to withdraw from the matters at hand, and every time the young prophet declares that he will never allow this separation between the two of them to occur without being actively present. And so it goes, as Elisha swears several times: ‘As surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you.’ Even in the midst of the prophet telling him that the time is about to be fulfilled he refuses to be deterred from his elder.

Don’t you know that God is thrilled when we are sold out for him—no matter what? Elisha received a double portion of the spirit of Elijah for his faithfulness. A single share would have been great, but his commitment to his Master brought him into a birthright relationship.
